Bird Control – Edmonton International Airport

Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is a leader in the world of new technology implementation. This airport was the first in the world to integrate the falcon drone bird technology into daily airport operations. This was a truly groundbreaking undertaking, because so many airports prohibit or severely limit drone use on or near airport grounds. The focus of this project was to reduce nesting, and overall populations and bird strikes to aircrafts. It was also an opportunity to prove the safety and reliability of the falcon drone bird technology.

EDMONTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

In 2017, EIA was Canada’s fifth-busiest airport by passenger traffic and the largest major Canadian airport by land area. It is a not-for-profit corporation, and their mandate is to drive economic prosperity for the city of Edmonton. Historically, EIA is an early-adopter of promising technologies that can add value. They take great care to ensure they implement new technologies strategically and safely, so The Drone Bird was a natural choice. The company’s safety record, combined with forward-thinking and proven success, made it ideal.

The airport’s Wildlife Management Plan integrated the The Drone Bird Company bird drone to guide birds safely away from air traffic, and discouraged nesting near airside and glide paths. The Drone Bird Company has been proven around the globe to be an effective, ecologically-friendly method of bird control. This drone mimics the flight of an actual falcon, making its flight behavior indistinguishable from its natural counterpart. Other birds believe that their natural enemy is present when our expert pilots fly to both scare and ‘lure’ birds away, and redirect flocks.

RESULTS

At EIA our drone pilots logged around 200 falcon drone bird flights over a 2-month time span. Well over 10,000 birds were chased away from active runways, reducing the risk of bird strikes . Aside from running a full bird control operation at EIA, The Drone Bird Company and partner AERIUM Analytics also performed several other drone operations. These activities include an aerial scan of a runway, allowing for high density data collection and mapping of the EIA’s aerotropolis. The companies accomplished all these operations with zero safety incidents. Airport stakeholders were so happy with our combined performance that they asked for further coverage in the coming years.
